Commissioning a portrait or still life painting is an exciting and memorable experience for my clients, providing them a quality work of art to cherish for a lifetime.
I place great emphasis on the initial planning meeting, which typically takes place either at the client's home or office to discuss the subject and composition of the painting. Placement of the painting and lighting in the home or office environment is also taken into account, which can impact the size and orientation of the canvas, as well as framing options. If it is to be a memorial portrait, photographic or reference material is reviewed and selected.
For each subject in a portrait, an initial sitting will be scheduled during which I can work from life to create a color sketch and refine elements of the pose and costume. Reference photos will be taken to provide information as the portrait is completed in my studio. I will then prepare a preliminary sketch and color study for approval, as well as an estimate of the completion time.
If my clients are local, I encourage them to schedule from two to four sittings of two to three hours each to develop the painting from life. It is a unique experience, and one that gives them a real connection with the great tradition of fine portraiture.
When the painting is almost finished, I may request a final sitting with portrait subjects to allow for final color adjustments. Finishing touches are applied in the studio and delivery is arranged. Although framing is not included, I usually make recommendations on suitable framing, or arrange framing by a reputable framer prior to delivery.
